Belimo sensor technology sets new standards
Belimo AG from Switzerland has been known in the HVAC sector (heating/ventilation/climate) for over 40 years as a specialist and world market leader in ventilation damper actuators. But this approach does not go far enough. For many years, the company has also been offering motorised water actuators such as control valves in Hub– and ball valve design as well as butterfly valves. And again and again Belimo proves its innovative strength in this field. So it was only logical to bring a range of sensors onto the market and thus become an even stronger full-range supplier of field devices for customers in the HVAC industry.
Overview of the Belimo range of sensors
Launched in 2017, the range includes transducers for pressure, temperature, humidity, CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The sensors can be used indoors, in ducts and pipelines or outdoors. In addition, there are volume flow sensors for pipelines.
As usual from the company, all devices are based on state-of-the-art electronics, are of the highest quality, extremely robust and very durable. The unusually long guarantee period of 5 years also applies to these articles. The transducers are classified for the requirements of NEMA 4X or IP 65. This means that they can be used not only in comfort air-conditioning technology indoors, but also outdoors and in harsh industrial environments.
The articles are BACnet and Modbus compatible and can therefore be easily integrated into state-of-the-art control systems. Reverse polarity protected electronics prevent wiring errors and modular cable glands allow additional wiring options and mounting configurations.
Snap-in lids and push-in terminals allow virtually tool-free mounting. The removable mounting plates also serve as a drilling template. This enables a very time-saving installation.
And, of course, the devices also comply with the Belimo standard in terms of design. The well-known orange housing colour identifies the transducers in every system as a Belimo product.
The temperature sensors are subdivided into the outdoor, duct average, duct/submersible, installation, cable and frost protection series. A multitude of possible output signals ensures a safe connection with all common building automation systems. These output signals are passive (NTC or RTD) or active (0…5/10 V or 4…20 mA). Up to 8 measuring ranges can be selected on the transducer. This helps enormously to reduce stock levels, simplifies logistics and provides more flexibility. The additional sintered coating of all channel, immersion and cable sensors offers special protection against moisture, vibrations and other mechanical loads.
The humidity sensors are available in the outdoor, duct and condensation series. The CMOS-based polymer sensor guarantees an accuracy of +/- 2% relative humidity with a long term deviation of less than +/- 0.25%. And this without being impaired by high humidity and contamination. This is a multisensor with the selectable output variables absolute humidity, relative humidity, dew point and enthalpy. In addition, up to 4 temperature ranges selectable at the humidity sensor offer more flexibility for commissioning, stock and logistics.
The air quality sensors are available with several combinations of measured variables. The standard measurement is always CO2. Temperature or temperature and humidity can be combined. Combinations with VOC, VOC and temperature or VOC plus mix of CO2 and VOC as well as temperature are also possible.
The additional reference channel of the 2-channel sensor reliably compensates for temperature and long-term drifts. This ensures the highest accuracy of the measured values over the long term. The two-channel self-calibration enables the sensors to be used even where the usual Automatic Background Calibration is not applicable.
The range includes several different versions:
- Differential pressure sensor for air with 8 measuring ranges selectable at the sensor, LCD display and volume flow output optional
- differential pressure switch for air with adjustable switching point
- differential pressure sensor water in stainless steel housing
- Pressure sensor for water and refrigerant with stainless steel fittings
The sensor is based on the ultrasonic transit time method and is therefore insensitive to contamination. It has already been used in the “Energy Valve” control valve, which was introduced with great success. This measuring function is now available as an independent device. The flow sensor has the following outstanding characteristics:
- Multipoint wet calibration ensures high reproducibility and accuracy over the entire measuring range
- Temperature and glycol compensation through patented logic
- +/- 2% measured value accuracy and +/- 0.5% reproducibility ensure precise flow measurement
- Installation even in difficult space conditions due to a short inlet distance and unnecessary minimum outlet distance
- Low power consumption of 0.5 W allows for smaller transformer dimensions
