Restauration of the Venus Grotto in the Linderhof Gardens
The Venus Grotto in the Schlosspark is a unique building based on the illusionary architecture of King Ludwig II in the form of an artificial stalactite cave.
He had the first act of Richard Wagner’s opera “Thannhäuser” staged in the grotto on the one hand, and the motif of Capri’s Blue Grotto on the other. Georg Dollmann, court building director and landscape sculptor August Dirigl, built the cave in the years 1876-1877. In the 19th century it was probably the largest building of its kind, although it was only intended for use by the king during his lifetime.
Shortly after its completion, however, moisture problems arose in the grotto. For this reason, a roof was erected over the main grotto as early as 1889/90, but this did not completely solve the problem, as underground flowing water was still able to penetrate the thick natural stone walls, especially after heavy rainfall or melting snow.
The damage caused by water over time can no longer be overlooked today. The humidity that rises from the lake inside the grotto also contributes to the continuous decay of the room shell and equipment. There is therefore an urgent need for restoration and air-conditioning measures.
Unfavourable climatic conditions in the interior of the Venus Grotto (cave climate, moisture input through visitor traffic, waterfall, slope and layer water) lead to further and further corrosion.
In order to stop the corrosion process, an air conditioning system should be installed to reduce the humidity in the vicinity of the wire plaster shell to 80% relative humidity. This project will be realised by the experienced plant manufacturer Manfred Himmelreich & Co. GmbH from Munich, for whom Felderer is supplying the plant components:
